The Hexham bonfire and fireworks extravaganza is held each year on the Saturday around 5th November on The Sele It was established by Hexham Round Table in 1956, and attracts crowds upwards of 12,000 (weather permitting, of course). The event itself is entirely self-funding, and allows Hexham Round Table to make donations to local charities and community organisations throughout the year.
In 2010 we raised over £14,000, leaving over £6,000 to be donated throughout the year to good causes throughout Tynedale.
Kimbolton Fireworks, the last surviving manufacturer of display fireworks in the country, provide and manage the professional display. In 2009 Hexham Round Table increased funding to put on an even more impressive event for the town – the smiles and comments of people leaving the Sele on that evening confirmed this was a good move!
Musical entertainment is provided by the Sunshine Panners, from Haydon Bridge High School, and the A Batida Da Rua Samba drummers, from Hexham’s Queen Elizabeth High School.
Cleaning up after such a large event is no mean feat, and the local Scouts do a wonderful job of scouring The Sele for rubbish and bringing it back to its former glory, minus the scorched earth where the bonfire was the previous evening!
Many individuals, companies and organisations contribute services and materials for the bonfire, and we could not make it such a success without them:
