Hexham is a market town by the Tyne just after the confluence of the North Tyne from Kielder and the South Tyne rising in the Pennines. St. Wilfred founded a monastery here in 674 AD. The Anglo-Saxon crypt survives in today's Abbey, which is mostly 12th century. The grammar school was given a royal charter by Queen Elizabeth the First and its' successor, the Queen Elizabeth High School, celebrated its' 400th. anniversary.
Situated approximately half-way between the North Sea coast and the Solway Firth as well as approximately half-way between the north of Scotland and the south of England, Hexham was given the epithet "The Heart of All England" by Charles I.
